So please don’t expect any learned discourse upon poetic forms from me, especially after it took me three listens of song #1, Vellum, to determine that the chorus – with its repetitions of a word that sounded kind of invocation-like – was actually the word vellum (1). At this point, I sighed and poured a shot y’all, I love Clannad, I truly do, but even in the English songs, half the time I don’t understand what they’re saying. Best of all, Nádúr continues Clannad’s tradition of being both vexingly and delightfully elusive, including no lyrics or translations for any of the songs. The cover-lining notes, composed by writer Colum McCann, uses an odd poetic-prose that reads a bit awkwardly, but the basic concept is that this album reflects Clannad’s essential nature, the mixture of ancient roots and modern fruits that defines the band’s sound. Given the fog, I think that Herne the Hunter is their uncredited sixth member. Clannad’s just released their first new album in about fifteen years, y’all: Nádúr, or Nature.
